Keeping kids safe on Roblox: A parent and carer's guide

22 Nov 2024

Online gaming platforms like Roblox have become increasingly popular among children and teenagers. Understanding this virtual world is crucial to ensure your child's safety and well-being.

What is Roblox?

Roblox is more than just a game; it's an expansive online platform where users can play, create, and share games.

Here's a breakdown of its key features:

  • User-generated content: Unlike traditional video games, most Roblox games are created by users, not professional developers.
  • Massive user base: Roblox has reported 79.5 million average daily users playing Roblox games in the second quarter of 2024. This platform is particularly popular among children aged 6-14.
  • Free to play: The basic platform is free, but it offers in-game purchases using a virtual currency called Robux.
  • Social interaction: Players can friend each other, join groups, and communicate through chat features.
  • Cross-platform: Available on various devices including PCs, smartphones, and gaming consoles.

Potential harms of Roblox

While Roblox can be a fun and creative outlet, it's important to be aware of potential risks:

1. Inappropriate content:

Some user-created games may contain violence or mature themes that are not suitable for children. The platform's vast nature makes it challenging to moderate all content effectively.

2. Online predators:

Like many online platforms, Roblox can be used by predators to target children. The chat feature can be exploited to initiate inappropriate conversations or grooming attempts.

3. Cyberbullying:

The social nature of Roblox opens the door to potential harassment or bullying among players. Children may encounter mean comments, exclusion from games, or targeted harassment.

4. In-app purchases:

The allure of virtual items and currency (Robux) can lead to excessive spending. Children may feel pressured to buy items to fit in or progress in games.

5. Addiction and excessive screen time:

The engaging nature of Roblox can lead to excessive playtime, impacting sleep and offline activities.

6. Scams and fraud:

Some users may try to trick others into giving away personal information or virtual items. Phishing attempts and fake offers for free Robux are also common.

7. Privacy concerns:

Children may unknowingly share personal information through chat or in-game interactions. Some games might request access to device features like the camera or microphone.

Protecting your child on Roblox

To shield your child from the dangers associated with Roblox, consider implementing these platform-specific measures:

1. Account restrictions

Enable "Account Restrictions" in the Privacy tab of Account Settings. This limits chat functionality and blocks access to user-generated content for under-13 users. Restricted accounts can only see and say preset messages in chat.

2. Advanced chat filters

Roblox uses AI-powered chat filters to block inappropriate content and personal information. For extra safety, set chat options to "Friends" or "No One" in the privacy settings.

3. Content ratings system

Familiarise yourself with Roblox's content labels: "All Ages," "9+," "13+," and "17+". Use the "Account Restrictions" setting to limit access to age-appropriate games only.

You can also manually review games your child wants to play by checking their content rating.

4. Parental controls

Access this at roblox.com/parental-controls. You can:

  • Set daily time limits for weekdays and weekends separately.
  • Monitor and approve friend requests.
  • Set monthly spending limits for Robux purchases.
  • Receive notifications about your child's activity.

Some popular Roblox games have their own parental controls. For example, in "Adopt Me!", you can disable trading to prevent scams.

What more can you do?

You can take these additional steps to ensure your child's safety while using Roblox

  • Teach your child how to use the in-game reporting system. Show them how to report inappropriate behavior, content, or users directly to Roblox moderators.
  • Teach them not to share personal information and explain the importance of privacy. Help them recognise potential scams or inappropriate content. Encourage them to trust their instincts if something feels off.
  • Regularly check your child's friend list and chat history. Discuss the games they're playing and who they're interacting with.
  • Consider playing Roblox together to understand the platform better and foster open communication about their experiences.
  • Establish and enforce daily or weekly time limits for playing Roblox and discuss rules regarding in-app purchases and Robux spending.
  • Consider using gift cards instead of linking a credit card to the account.
  • Encourage a balance between online gaming and other activities, promoting hobbies that don’t involve screens.
  • Keep up with Roblox's safety features at roblox.com/safety. Watch educational videos with your child about online safety on the platform.
  • Follow Parent Hub to gain additional insights into managing your child’s gaming experience effectively.
