Birdys backyard

Saturday 6th Aug
That was the most brutal thing I have ever attempted, not going to lie, that was hard! But it is done, 14 official laps @birdysbackyardultra, 15 unofficial for a total of 100.6kms, would I do it again? Absolutely!!

Running for Dollys Dream

Saturday 9th Jul
As some of you know I am running my second ultra marathon at Birdys Backyard in WA in August, I decided to use it as a fundraiser and chose Dollys dream as they stand for something I am passionate about.

I was almost that little girl, I was bullied at school, from the time I was 9 when we first moved until I was 16 and had gone to a school that was big enough for me to be anonymous. They used to tease (oh how they teased) I was dacked in the playground, I was invited to sleepovers just to be ostracised, they spat on my work, you couldn’t sleep at school camp in case they dipped your finger in warm water to make you wet the bed, my life was hell, there was another girl who was tormented too but we couldn’t be friends openly because when she was picked on I was left alone and vice versa, the teachers were helpless because the parents didn’t want to see, I didn’t speak to my parents about it because what was the point?
This is my biggest fear for my children, there were some issues during kids sport a couple of  years ago and I almost felt like that lost little girl because of the attitudes of those involved, no one wanted to deal with it. No one wanted to really hear and try to change what was happening.
Again I experienced bullying with one of my children last year, again, limited support. Brushing it off, making it seem insignificant until there was a bigger incident they couldn’t ignore.
To me this is frightening, has nothing really changed in all those years? I am scared for our children, I am scared that ppl don’t care until it’s in their own backyard. I am still affected by what happened back then, it affects every relationship, every reaction, overreaction, worries about what other people think and how I will fit in or not fit in.
If my child ever, EVER bullied another child I want to know! And I would hope we could be united in helping our children understand what it is to care for each other, to not exclude each other, to be kind and to care for one another, we don’t have to be best friends but we need to be kind ❤️

I love that you are dedicating your run to such an amazing cause. I'm very passionate about preventing bullying and hope things are changing bringing more awareness to people. I'm right behind you Mel cheering you on! You should be very proud of yourself, when I first met you I could tell you were a good soul. You go girl! Throught most of my schooling I was that girl who was an easy target, different from the rest and was bullied for it. The more I retaliated the worse it would get. It's surprising how many things they could find "wrong" with me, to single me out and humiliate. They have stuck with me eversince. You never forget those things but it gave me one of many reasons to never be like those nasty people. I was so glad I lived on a farm with my special animal friends and got away from the toxic environment. I can only imagine how hard it would be now with so much social media exposure, I never had social media accounts but the bullies still got ahold of me through my friends phones and that was bad enough let alone what kids go through now!
